Tax relief on fuel; Is it a substantive decrease or tokenism? | The Urban Debate

On The Urban Debate, we discuss the centre’s move to reduce excise duty on fuel, just a day before Diwali. We understand from our panellists if this is a political decision or an economic reason on the same is taken under consideration. Following up on Centre’s call for a commensurate cut in taxes on fuel by the states, a number of state governments also reduced VAT rate on petrol and diesel to provide bigger gain of price reduction to consumers. Wednesday's excise duty cut had translated into a reduction in the price of petrol in the range of ₹ 5.7 to ₹ 6.35 per litre across the country and diesel rates by ₹ 11.16 to ₹ 12.88.
